The 1912 Mason and Hamlin BB
Founded in 1854, Mason & Hamlin is one of America’s oldest and most respected piano manufacturers. Of the hundreds of American piano companies that flourished in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Mason & Hamlin is one of only a handful that survive today.

Continue below to find out why...

the Piano - the Tool
The piano is the workbench that holds the tools a pianist uses to produce music. If those tools are not in excellent condition and of the highest quality, it will be more difficult to produce an end result that will be pleasing to the creator of the music.

Learning how to play piano on a very well-maintained instrument kept in good tune and regulated correctly will make the piano learning experience more pleasing, and therefore make it easier to attain good results.

You do not want your tools to get in the way of the work you produce, but rather aid in sculpting your desired end-result.

This would be one of the many reasons why we are very happy to offer instruction on an instrument of this caliber.

Regularly Maintained
To ensure that the Marsh School of Music offers the best possible learning experience to all students, the Mason and Hamlin is very regularly tuned, checked for regulation across the action (and corrected if necessary), voiced, moving action parts lubricated, and kept in a climate-controlled environment with constant humidity control to ensure the piano always performs at the highest level. Even though this piano is more than 113 years old, it received a complete rebuild 5 years ago, so it acts and behaves like a new piano!

Mason and Hamlin...who?
It is not unusual for us to come across individuals who have never heard of Mason and Hamlin. How could such a high-quality instrument and brand be so unknown to so many people?

The successful marketing strategies of another well-known piano company caused the Mason and Hamlin name to become one that is typically only known by those on the "inside"...
We aim to change that.
